Senior Financial Specialist, FIG Africa, International Finance Corporation

Dr. Sanjay Kalpage is a Senior Financial Specialist with IFC’s Financial Institutions Group (FIG) Advisory team in Africa, where he heads the SME Banking and Risk Advisory Services Practice Group for Eastern and Southern Africa. He provides technical expertise to clients across the region, helping financial institutions to build and scale up their SME banking businesses and participating in due diligence exercises with regional IFC investment teams. He joined the IFC in 2014 and is based in Nairobi.
Sanjay has over 25 years of experience in the consulting and banking industries across Asia, Africa, North America and Europe. Prior to joining IFC, he was a Director at Standard Chartered Bank, where he worked in their Singapore and London offices in a number of roles in strategy, corporate banking and corporate management. Prior to that, Sanjay worked at consulting firm McKinsey & Company, where his clients included a range of financial institutions and governments in both developed and emerging markets. He led projects focused on issues including strategy, client segmentation and value propositions, risk management, sales, operations, organizational restructuring and post-merger management.
Sanjay has a PhD from the University of New South Wales (Australia), an MPhil in Economics from Cambridge University (UK), an MSc in Policy at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (USA) and undergraduate degrees in economics and engineering from the University of Pennsylvania (USA). He is a Chartered Financial Analyst.
